Claire Naughton event in Boston this evening
Claire Naughton is a recently retired Foxboro teacher running in a special election for state rep, on February 7th. The seat has been held by Republicans for decades, but this election is very competitive. As campaign strategist Dan Cohen says, Claire's campaign "represents an opportunity to fill a
+seat that was held by a very conservative Republican with a very progressive Democrat." I joined the Claire Naughton campaign after she hired Pat Jehlen's campaign manager, Georgia Isman (I'm currently the webmaster for clairenaughton.com).
One thing the Naughton campaign has done to make this race competitive, is collect a large and impressive set of endorsements, including the biggest powerhouse in Massachusetts legislative politics, MassEquality. She's also got Neighbor to Neighbor, a host of unions (UAW, SEIU, IBEW, teachers, nurses, ...), environmental organizations, pro-choice groups, and others. And, two prominent Massachusetts Democrats are getting involved: Barney Frank endorsed her early on, and today, Senator John Kerry is appearing at a reception in support of Claire Naughton at 21st Amendment in downtown Boston, 5:30-7:30pm.
This is one of the key progressive campaigns in Massachusetts this winter. So, if you live in Boston, and are curious to meet Claire and get involved, tonight is a great opportunity to do so.
I'm going, and if I have time to do a writeup later, I'll probably post it over on Blue Mass Group. Also, if you're a DFA-Boston member but missed last night's meeting, we're considering endorsing her. If you want to participate in the deliberations, make sure you're signed up on DFA-Link.
